Why We Don’t Use Influencers to Review Our Wheels

In the era of social media, it’s common to see "famous" YouTubers and influencers unboxing gear and offering glowing endorsements. You might notice that our wheels are missing from those feeds. That isn’t an accident—it’s a choice.

We’ve made a conscious decision not to engage in paid "reviews" or send free gear to influencers. Here is why:

1. Expertise Can’t Be Replicated

A wheelset isn’t just a product; it’s a piece of engineering. To truly review a wheel, you need to understand the tension of the spokes, the geometry of the hub, and the nuances of the build process. Most influencers are entertainers or content creators, not wheel builders.

If you don’t understand the "how" behind the assembly, you cannot accurately judge the "why" behind the performance. We believe the only people qualified to judge our work are the people who ride them every day and the craftsmen who know what makes a wheel stay true under pressure.

2. We Value Honesty Over "Agendas"

Let’s be honest: when someone receives a $2,000 wheelset for free or is paid to feature a product, there is an unspoken agenda. It is very difficult to be critical of something that was given to you as a gift.

We don't want "polite" reviews; we want honest ones. We don't pay for praise because we believe that trust shouldn't have a price tag.

When researching for a new wheel-set, it was extremely difficult to find 1 for my needs. Wheels that are super-light from the Far East seem to be more sensitive to wind even though they’re fast. Some carbon spokes wheels are way too stiff. Some are hookless and most western brand wheels are generally more expensive. Hence, I’ve decided to venture into a custom wheelset to suit my needs: fast, extreme stability even in obnoxious gusts, extreme durability, decent pricing and of reasonable weight. That’s where Andy came in, noting my requirements and walking through the entire decision process which led me to the 49/49 SLR with CK hubs. Having tried various wheels from the far east and from the campy boras, I wanted to find a wheelset that is equivalent or if not, better than the bora ultra wto c23s. And I’m glad I did. I rode the new wheelset and was just amazed that this wheel ticked all my requirements. Buttery smooth, super stable and planted, carries momentum well on punchy sections. Just overall impressed. Is this wheelset the best on paper? Probably difficult as wheels coming from the far east are getting more competitive rapidly. But what I’m getting is top notch service that is catered to my riding needs and that matters the most. Now I can understand why WheelAngel has so many good reviews, because their work speaks for itself.

This is my second pair of wheels from WheelAngel, and the experience has been excellent once again. This wheelset was built with Chris King hubs, and Andy was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable throughout the process. He spent about an hour patiently walking me through different hub technologies and the trade-offs between them, making sure I understood my options so I could make an informed decision based on my riding style. I really appreciated the time and care he took—there was no pressure, just honest advice and clear explanations.
